From big to small screen – Dramatic Television Incubator supports transitioning producers at Strategic Partners 2016

June 14, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Endless creative potential. Less risk-averse. Captures short attention spans. Allows more time to shine. They’re all factors prompting directors, producers, writers and actors to move from feature films to television. True Detective, The Knick, and The Strain are just a few Hollywood examples.

Strategic Partners 2016, presented by the Atlantic Film Festival from Sept. 15-17, is easing that transition with its Dramatic Television Incubator. Now in its second year, the program targets mid- to senior-level producers who have a dramatic series in development, with a broadcaster attached, and face a learning curve as they transition to the new medium.

“It was an exceptional opportunity to garner feedback from top producers on a series I have in development with Bell Media,” says Marc Almon, one of the incubator’s inaugural participants in 2015. “In fact, two of the producers – Justin Thomson-Glover and Patrick Irwin of Far Moor Media (The Fall, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) – are now co-producing partners on the series!”

Strategic Partners Program Manager Laura Mackenzie points out that producing television requires navigating a new set of hurdles, with new partners, and also grappling with an array of global incentives and co-production opportunities, which do not follow the same guidelines as feature films.

“That’s why we’re lining up a robust group of television-focused experts guaranteed to educate and enlighten producers about all of the relevant issues,” she says. To date, they include Lars Hermann, Deputy Head of Drama, DR Fiction (Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Denmark) and Tom Hastings, Director of Drama, Independent Production (Bell Media).
